Training

This section details the comprehensive training process involved in obtaining the desired aviation certification or endorsement, covering both theoretical and practical aspects.
  • Enroll in a seaplane rating training program with a certified flight instructor (CFI) who is qualified to provide seaplane instruction.

  • Receive ground training covering the differences in handling seaplanes compared to land-based aircraft, including water operations, buoyancy, water taxiing, takeoffs, landings, and other operational considerations.

  • Complete flight training sessions in a seaplane under the supervision of your CFI.

  • Practice various maneuvers and procedures specific to seaplanes, such as water takeoffs and landings, glassy water landings, step taxiing, and confined area operations.

Tests, Exams & Experience

Discover the required exams, flight experience and tests to progress towards your pilot qualifications.

Gain Experience
Demonstrate proficiency in operating the seaplane solo under the supervision of your CFI.

Accumulate a sufficient amount of flight time and experience in seaplanes to meet the training requirements set by your instructor and any applicable regulations or guidelines.

Endorsement Evaluation
Complete the required training and demonstrate competency in handling seaplanes to your instructor’s satisfaction.

Practical Test (Optional)
While not always required, some instructors may choose to conduct a practical evaluation or checkride to assess your proficiency and readiness for the seaplane rating.

If a practical test is conducted, you’ll need to demonstrate your ability to perform various maneuvers and procedures in the seaplane, including water operations, takeoffs, landings, and emergency procedures.

Rating

Once you've completed the required training, solo flights, and any evaluations, your CFI will provide you with a seaplane rating in your logbook.

The rating will authorize you to operate seaplanes solo or with passengers, depending on the specific terms of the rating.

It's important to note that the exact requirements for a seaplane rating may vary slightly between flight schools or instructors. Always consult with your CFI and follow their guidance regarding seaplane training and rating requirements. Additionally, ensure that you comply with any regulatory requirements set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or relevant aviation authorities.
